Feet Can't Reach the Floor on Long Flights? How to Choose an Airplane Footrest

In short: if your feet don't reach the floor on a long flight, a footrest gives them somewhere to rest. A foot hammock hangs from the seat-back tray table and is the lightest option; an inflatable footrest raises your feet higher.
Whichever you use, stow it for taxi, take-off and landing, and never use it in an exit row. Some US airlines ban these devices entirely, so check before you fly.
| Type | Weight | Packed size | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foot hammock | about 200–300 g | fits a drawstring bag | travellers who also want one under the desk |
| Inflatable footrest | about 300–500 g | about the size of a book | raising your feet to seat height |
| Cushion or stool | heavier | bulky | home or office only |

Why do your feet dangle on a plane?
Economy seats are designed around average height. If you are under about 160 cm, your feet often can't rest flat on the floor, so you sit on tiptoe or with your feet hanging. After ten hours the seat edge presses on the back of your thighs and your legs feel tight.
Choosing a footrest
Foot hammock
A strap loops over the tray table and a pad hangs below it. Adjust the strap so your knees sit at roughly 90 degrees. Look for a support board in the pad so it stays flat, and a two-level pad if you want to raise your feet further.
Inflatable footrest
It sits on the floor in front of you and raises your feet. Airlines are stricter about items on the floor that could block the aisle.
Airline rules
| Airline | Rule |
|---|---|
| China Airlines, EVA Air, STARLUX | Allowed with conditions: not during taxi, take-off or landing; not in exit rows; must not block your neighbour |
| Delta, United, American | Mostly banned |
| Others | Check the airline's website or ask the crew |
Rules change; always follow the airline and cabin crew.
Rest your back and your feet
A lumbar pillow fills the gap behind your lower back; a foot hammock gives dangling feet a place to rest.
General advice only. If your legs stay swollen, painful or numb after sitting, see a doctor.
